David Goloshchyokin: I am not just a jazz player, I am a jazz campaigner

This year, the iconic Russian musician David Goloshchyokin will participate in the Koktebel Jazz Party festival for the first time. The famous jazzman will be the headliner on the first day of the festival. In an interview David Goloshchyokin stressed that it would be especially important for him to play for those who might be hearing jazz for the first time.

"I am most interested in meeting people who are not aware of my music. I am not just a jazz player, I am a jazz campaigner. I am interested in promoting the genre. And I hope that my work will convince people who listen to jazz music that it is a serious art and it should be taken as seriously as classical music," Goloshchyokin said.

David Goloshchyokin also spoke about the program he was going to perform at the festival and about his band.

"I never specially prepare anything. I simply go out there and play jazz with my fellow musicians, they are the best jazzmen in St. Petersburg and Russia," Goloshchyokin noted. He added that next year his band would mark its 50th anniversary. There are musicians who have only recently started working with Goloshchyokin as well as veteran musicians. For example, drummer Viktor Shcherbin has been playing with Goloshchyokin for 42 years.
